Hacker News's "tuning out" is a mirage. It hides a seedy underbelly of unaccountable user-based moderation and vote manipulation that is very plain to see if you use the "active" front page instead of the standard one, and turn on showdead.

I feel like the experiment of moderation decisions via mob rule is largely a failure, and I much prefer the style of old webforums where moderation was left only to the people who ran the site/server and the people hand-picked by them. Tildes does this, as does Discord.

Personally, my news diet is Kagi with a well-curated blocklist and Tildes with a few targeted topic tag filters.
