Maybe AGI is impossible not for any technical reasons, but because AI is a self-limiting technology? As AI improves, it destroys the educational system that creates the researchers that develop it.

LLMs democratize personal tutoring. AI can massively improve education, if done right.

They are working well now because they live off the pile of human-created online content. Give it a few years. When all the AI has to feed on is the output of other AI bots, they will likely hit a reality wall and halucinate themselves into insanity. Forget new physics. It will probably be hard to get an AI to admit the earth isnt flat.

I expect they'll keep training on the pre-2022 corpus and supplement with new curated material. Of course they'll use AI to curate so the same process will eventually happen but probably can be slowed significantly.

Web 2.0 is already doing a great job at "human model collapse". No generative content needed, people are consuming poor quality output of other humans and leading to a decline in discourse. Tik-Tokification.

There is nothing democratic about a technology being forced upon people. No one voted for this.

IME when VC says “democratizing” you can substitute “degrading” for the real meaning.

Regular schools are already a forced experience. You're basically imprisoned for 12 years. A range of tutoring services seems like a massive upgrade in freedom.

No, public schooling is something that lifts people out of poverty. 100 years ago public schooling only want to 6th or 8th grade in most states.

Equating government welfare programs to better society with for profit systems is frankly disgusting. One has provided real empowerment and nearly erased illiteracy rates, the only is simply a system used to extract wealth for a few individuals and not society.

I do not trust any system that has shown to be a degrading experience to raising literacy or teaching others to critically think for themselves.
