Did you actually read about it? Because the entire story is more a warning for malpractice of the psychiatrist in question than an actual effect.

The government told the woman to find solace in dying on the job. The woman was critical of this so the psychiatrist claimed she had sexual attraction to the hostage taker

Stockholm syndrome in everyday speech means that victims many times take the side of their abusers and defend them and their actions when a third party wants to help them. And this is extremely prevalent, most people have seen this behaviour many times in real life.

In the case of the Stockholm hostage situation, it's not just a situation where a hostage is doing what she's told to in order to survive. Anybody who is interested can find tons of footage, documentaries, interviews.
