I’m curious what kind of strings came with the funding, and what kind of oversight contracts you had to sign.

No strings at all. Oversight: the way it worked is that you agree on a proposal and milestones. When a milestone is complete you present it to them and then they pay for that part of the agreement.

If memory serves making it easy and accessible was one of their main goals, and they indeed lived up to it.
