Is the skill for this competition in honing the tool, or in using it? Or a combination of both?

Blade sharpness is a huge factor in performance but thats still just 50% of tool prep; once you start working you also need to maintains correct pressure, tool much and tour shaving will be to thick, too little and you atop cutting.
