I think this was the biggest mistake that Java made. Breaking reverse compatibility after Java 8 means that thousands of organizations will never leave that version. There is an entire industry based around maintaining Java 8. Eventually there will be two versions of Java, just like Python 2 and 3. There will be Java 8 and Java 698.
