Not at all associated with the project, just came across it the other day. Look like it uses a single optical mouse sensor and corrects in a single dimension at a time.

Oh hey, that's my device! Thanks for sharing. It actually uses 4 optical mouse sensors so that there is redundancy to minimize error. Very much a work in progress at the moment, but there are lots of stuff I'm hoping to improve in the coming weeks to make it more suitable for useful woodworking projects.
