Dolt is Git for Data

I don't find the name very nice: there's too much potential of mixing it with "doit" with a capital "d" and a capital "i".

I blame font designers.

I mean forget about mixing it up, what about the actual meaning of the word:

I thought this was an odd name too, but I'm guessing it's intentional, as git also is a derogatory word with a similar meaning.

I’d have gone with digit.

Without ever thinking hard about it I always assumed git came from American cowboy/western slang:

Every time I type it in I am visualizing my little code changes as sickly orphaned calves being herded into the main pen with all the mature cows currently working away at their various functions.

Of course given the actual author the British/European meaning makes a lot more sense.
