Most Taiwanese fear that they have to re-unite with China. I personally don't think that China will invade Taiwan. If mainland Chinese people will see, that their government is bombarding other Chinese I'm not sure if they approve of that and realize that they don't want to belong to China. The biggest goal of the Communist government is to stay in power. It will probably be too dangerous for them to risk. And by the way, young Taiwanese and Taiwanese that live for many generations in Taiwan don't think they are mainland Chinese. They are Chinese heritage but I haven't heard one say we want to re-unite with China. There are many newer generations from mainland China in Taiwan that probably don't mind as much but people from old families in Taiwan for sure don't associate themselves with mainland China.

Right, Chinese killing Chinese and approving of that is unheard of :/

Remember that PRC is transitioning from being committee run to a personalistic dictatorship. If the calculus shifts only so slightly that one Xi would find advantages of an attack overweigh the risks, it will happen.

There is much lower decision threshold now with one person in charge. It's only a combination of objective factors: .tw defence potential, America's reading to defend it and criticality of certain Taiwan assets that keep it from happening.
