It's interesting to see Microsoft move their OS more and more in sync with Linux/OSX. Maybe they should invest in a Linux kernel based OS and build a compatibility wrapper on top of that instead?

Drivers. There are a lo of device drivers written for the Windows kernel that would need to be updated.
