This is all very confusing to me. The reasoning is it is unhealthy competition for their local businesses with this discount Chinese stuff. Okay that makes sense at some level of government is tasked with ensuring the stability of their economy. What I'm struggling with is why their solution to this is to block Temu. It seems to me the better solution would be to place a tariff onto these goods. This could provide the competition balance and income.

The other reason that blows my mind, having visited Indonesia a great many times, is the idea that Temu goods are not up to Indonesian quality standards. They seemingly said that with a completely straight face totally serious in what they were saying. Indonesian goods that are made for export to first world countries do generally have a higher quality standard than Chinese goods, but that's only because they are specifically made for export and they are overseen by companies from those first world companies to ensure the quality is there. Indonesian goods made for local use are on par with Chinese goods. It is all disposable trash.

It's an issue in Thailand as well, which is also considering blocking it. I believe (and I might be totally imagining this) that the problem is tracking. Temu can just mail stuff into the country in the same way my US family can mail me stuff in Bangkok. There's absolutely no way that customs in these countries has the ability to distinguish what is Temu and apply the appropriate tariffs, one package at a time. Sites like Amazon voluntarily apply the import rates (which already exist) so they don't get blocked. Again, the English reports here on Temu issues aren't always detailed or translated well so I could be misunderstanding the issue

Temu is, apparently, also under investigation[0] by EU officials for (IIUC) different reasons.
